Health Teams in School

School Health Team - Injured girl on wheel chair

The Children’s Trust, in collaboration with Miami-Dade County Public Schools and the Florida Department of Health in Miami-Dade County, developed this initiative to bring comprehensive health services to schools in Miami-Dade to improve access to high-quality health care.

Schools are staffed with a team of professionals including a nurse or nurse practitioner and a licensed clinical social worker. Schools with high enrollment have the option to augment staffing coverage with additional support from a licensed practical nurse.

Benefits of health teams in schools include:

  • A coordinated level of care

  • Expanded health screenings and assessments

  • Mental and behavioral health services

  • Nutrition and health counseling

  • Better access to a regular primary-care physician

  • Primary health services for uninsured students lacking other options

  • Emergency first aid/CPR

  • Chronic disease management

  • Immunizations
